The ThunderB-VTOL by BlueBird Aero Systems is a high-performance hybrid VTOL unmanned aerial system that combines the endurance, speed, and range of a fixed-wing UAV with the agility of vertical takeoff and landing. It is optimized for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, Reconnaissance (ISTAR), tactical mapping, and maritime operations from confined launch sites such as ship decks or remote terrain.
Vertical takeoff and landing allow deployment without runways. After launch, the system transitions to efficient fixed-wing cruise and returns to VTOL for landing—ideal for maritime or constrained environments.
Delivers 12+ hours of flight endurance and supports operations up to 150 km with digital communication links and tracking antennas. The maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) is approximately 35 kg, supporting a variety of payloads while maintaining VTOL capability.
Features a modular payload bay with quick-release connectors. Compatible sensors include stabilized EO/IR (including cooled IR), photogrammetric, radiometric, and multispectral cameras, with support for real-time HD video transmission and GPS-tagged tactical mapping (TMOD).
Equipped with three integrated datalinks, the system maintains mission continuity even under COM-JAM or GPS-denied conditions. It operates reliably in severe weather, harsh terrain, and from variable deployment platforms.
