Alaska DOT’s Skydio X10 Drone Livestreams Record-Breaking Glacial Flood

September 7, 2025 (Juneau, Alaska) — The Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) deployed Skydio X10 drones equipped with Starlink connectivity to livestream a historic glacial outburst flood in Juneau, marking a major advancement in drone-enabled emergency management and public safety operations.

The autonomous drone system provided real-time aerial visuals to first responders and disaster relief teams, allowing authorities to monitor rising water levels, assess infrastructure risks, and execute rapid response strategies. With traditional communications often disrupted during disasters, Starlink’s low-latency satellite network ensured continuous transmission from the affected zones.

“This successful livestream proves the critical role advanced drones can play in saving lives and protecting communities,” an Alaska DOT representative noted. “We can now capture actionable data even in the harshest weather and most remote environments.”

Why It Matters

  • Enhances situational awareness during floods, landslides, and wildfires

  • Improves decision-making for search and rescue missions

  • Reduces risk for responders by keeping them out of danger zones

  • Demonstrates scalability of drone–satellite integration for emergency operations

  • The Skydio X10 platform’s autonomous navigation, thermal imaging, and rugged durability were key to maintaining a stable aerial vantage point throughout the flood event. This operation strengthens the case for broader adoption of UAVs in U.S. public safety strategy.
