The FBI Wants ‘Unjammable’ Drones
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
December 6, 2025 (UNITED STATES) – The FBI is exploring the acquisition of “unjammable” drones, inspired by fiber optic drones used in Ukraine. These drones use a hardwired connection between the controller and the aircraft via a long spool of fiber optic cable, making them immune to radio jamming and extremely difficult to take down.
“While the FBI hasn’t specified how these drones will be used, their resistance to jamming could prove crucial in investigations against well-funded criminal organizations or in confined spaces like tunnels,” reports Seth Kurkowski for DroneDJ.
Fiber optic drones have proven effective in Ukraine, often carrying explosives in conflict zones, but the FBI’s focus is likely on surveillance and operational security rather than weaponization. Limitations include range restricted to the length of the cable (up to 20 miles) and the potential for cables to be caught or cut.
The bureau has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking potential suppliers. While RFIs do not guarantee procurement, they indicate the FBI’s interest in testing and possibly integrating these drones into operations. As counter-drone technology becomes increasingly accessible to criminals, unjammable drones could provide a significant advantage in law enforcement and investigative missions. (dronedj.com)
Key Points:
- FBI is exploring drones that are immune to radio jamming, called “unjammable” drones.
- Fiber optic drones use a hardwired connection between controller and drone via a long cable.
- Range is limited to cable length (up to 20 miles), with potential cable vulnerabilities.
- Primary use likely for surveillance, operational security, and law enforcement investigations.
- FBI issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify potential suppliers.
- Inspired by drones used in Ukraine, previously employed for military and explosive operations.
- Unjammable drones could counteract the growing threat of criminal use of anti-drone technologies.
